Greg Ives rejoins Hendrick Motorsports following the 2014 NASCAR season to take the reins as crew chief for fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the No. 88 Nationwide team in 2015.
A native of Bark River, Michigan, Ives first found interest in motorsports at a young age and continued racing through his teenage years, but it was under the hood where he found his true calling. After graduating from Michigan Technological University, Ives began as a mechanic at Hendrick Motorsports in the 24/48 shop in 2004 before moving into an engineering role on the No. 48 team in 2006. That was the same year Jimmie Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus won their first of five consecutive Sprint Cup championships. In seven years with the No. 48 team, Ives took part in 42 wins, 113 top-five finishes and 21 poles.
Ives transitioned to JR Motorsports in November 2012 as crew chief for Regan Smith. The duo earned two victories, eight top-five finishes and 19 top-10s en route to a third-place finish in the NASCAR Nationwide Series standings in 2013.
Prior to the 2014 season, Ives was named crew chief for rookie Chase Elliott. Ives guided Elliott to three victories, two pole positions, 16 top-five finishes and 26 top-10s in the Nationwide Series, winning JR Motorsports’ first Nationwide championship in the process. Elliott became NASCAR’s youngest champion and the first person in NASCAR history to win both the series championship and rookie of the year in the same season.
When Ives isn’t at the racetrack he spends time with his wife and kids. He enjoys yard work, and come football season, he’ll be cheering on his favorite team, the Green Bay Packers.
